The dictionary describes ‘addiction’ as ‘an abnormally strong craving’. It is the condition that is not normal and the patients suffering from it, seem to surrender to the cravings completely. While most of the people are addicted to using some kind of compulsive habits, others depend on the harmful substances like pills, drugs, morning glory seeds and other forms of substances to fulfill their cravings. There are several ways to cope up with and fight addiction. The most important tool in defeating addiction of any kind is determination. Once a person identifies the drawbacks of these compulsive disorders and realizes that instead of giving them control over things, these habits or lifestyle are messing up the progressive physical, emotional and social growth, they have to exude determination and strength in getting rid of these habits. At this point do not be shy of asking help from friends and family and seeking professional help. One of the best treatments against addiction is an approach that combines peer and professional support techniques. Another effective way to fight the cravings is to find a hobby or a way to spending time which not only involves mental work but, includes healthy exercises of the body as well, so that the body too is able to release its stress and the process of physical detoxification can be commenced. If one does not have that option they should seek other ways to alleviate their mental stress. This may include reading books or opting for gardening etc., or any activity which would keep the mind distracted. One of the best ways to keep on the path of recovery and ensuring surveillance is to make sure to appoint someone to whom the patient can be accountable to. This will allow maintaining a relationship, in which the patients will be able to seek guidance, help, motivation on the way to their recovery, while being filled with a sense of responsibility of their acts at every step. This job can be appointed to the therapist, a friend, a family member or any other close acquaintance. Another way to focus the energies of the patients is to allow them time to go over their lives, goals and objectives and gauge if they have been able to achieve them. If not then, they should be motivated to re-channelize their thoughts and the approaches to revise their strategies in attaining them. The thrill of achievement is known to play an important part in the recovery process of the addicts. When a patient is sober, they should introduce lifelong changes into their lifestyles, which are emotionally, physiologically and socially healthy for a person. This means opting for the right constituents of food, selecting healthy work out regime in their daily schedules and taking out time to spend quality time with friends and family. This will not only fulfill the various needs of the patients but, will also allow them a chance to enjoy life at its best.
